Grab his attention by saying 'Hey, Artoo!' and he's ready for more than 40 voice commands! Ask him if he remembers his famous friends, like Luke Skywalker, C-3PO or Jabba the Hutt. Each name will stir up a different response depending on Artoo's 'feelings' for that character. Just a few of Artoo's amazing attributes include moving along on his own, turning his front beam on and off, and even playing a secret message when you follow the proper voice commands. In 'Game' mode, Artoo plays the hide-and-seek game of Light Tag, dances to cantina music, guards your room with his sentry alarm , or even jazzes up your next party with 'Spin The Droid.' Once you've mastered Artoo's 'companion' and 'game' modes, move on to 'command' mode for plotting real-time maneuvering or programmed courses for the droid to follow! Artoo also boasts a secret cargo compartment and a unique swing-down utility arm that's also a beverage holder! Window box packaging.

Not as good as it looks Michael S. Sausville 2010-06-11
Bought this toy for my daughter who is eight years old, the toy looks good, is fairly durable not counting anything that pops open or holds things. All of which are horribly unreliable.
The problem is that it hardly performs as advertised. We read the manual and even went online for additional help trying to get the unit to do anything as advertised. It is very unreliable.
Even after my daughter 'trained it' it was more responsive to myself and my brother. You have to be loud, and speak slowly and succinctly. Children of course have a hard time with this on any given day.
It is easily confused, rarely does what is asked of it, you spend most of your time repeating commands over and over again trying desperately to get it to do as you wish.
My daughter wanted it to actually 'be a friend and follow her around' which it said it would do, sadly it does not perform this function well at all.
We have tried reprograming it many times and tried several people working as the primary person controlling the 'robot'.
Quite simply it is nowhere near as good as billed and it was a very expensive disappointment to my 8 year old.

A Must For Fans! Zachary Scott Yokum 2010-02-08
A must have for any Star Wars fan - though it obviously has its limitations, interacting with R2-D2 is definitely something all diehard fans have been waiting for.

This was a gift for my son. He was thrilled but maybe a little too young (6). You need to be clear with the commands and things need to be said a certain way. We have been working on that with our son so he can command the R2 unit properly. He absoluty loves it and I would buy it again for him. The R2 can be tempermental so getting him to do things can also be challenging. Working on the bugs out.
Great toy for kids and star wars fans Ariel Lacsamana 2010-01-07
We gave this as a Christmas present to our 7 year-old son who's a big Star Wars fan and he was able to set it up himself. It is sometimes stubborn like the real R2D2 and doesn't obey your command which makes it more interesting for him. My son and 6 year-old daughter loves the 'light tag' function where it plays hide and seek with them. It even plays a secret message from Princess Lea! We baught rechargeable D and AA batteries for it as well - the 'Tenergy' brand was a good deal for it.
R2D2 is Cool!!! Angela Leboeuf 2009-11-19
I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas. It is a really cool toy. R2D2 listens to voice commands, he plays hide-and seek, and even dances. R2D2 will even go on patrol, and alert you if someone enters the room. We have had R2 for almost a year now, and my son still enjoys him. I would recommend this toy for Star Wars fans or robot fans, he is awesome.
